Breaking News on the Web: Mats Sundin Timeline

Posted by Craig on 12/18/2008
As most know, I'm a huge hockey fan. Here's how news of the biggest hockey story of the year spread on the Web.

3:01 Pacific Time: NHL Director of Corporate Communications Michael DiLorenzo posts on Twitter: @umassdilo "sundin to canucks"

3:01 Pacific Time: Radio personality Buzz Bishop posts on Twitter: @buzzbishop "just got the press release. it's official SUNDIN IS A CANUCK"

3:06 Pacific Time: TSN posted a story saying Mats Sundin is a Vancouver Canuck

3:06 Pacific Time: Alanah McGinley of Kukla's Korner posts the news in the blog Canucks & Beyond

3:11 Pacific Time: Popular hockey site HockeyBuzz.com posts an update stating Sundin is a Canuck

3:12 Pacific Time: Vancouver online news site Straight.com reports the news

3:14 Pacific Time: Sportsnet.ca posts the story on its site

3:23 Pacific Time: ESPN.com posts the story on its site

The first official media outlet to break the news seems to be 95Crave in Vancouver. Buzz Bishop told me on Twitter that he announced the news on the station "seconds after presser was dropped, before twitter."

It would appear that the press release was officially sent out by the club at 3:00 Pacific Time (that is the time stamp for the story at Canucks.com as well). Just one minute later by Twitter, not bad. Certainly beat the big boys on the Web.

This is yet more evidence that Twitter is becoming a viable way to break news to a niche audience.

A nice timeline, but to properly assess the issue of Twitter & the MSM, you should also include yesterday's false alarm that was posting on Sportsnet, passed around on Twitter, and also reported on some radio stations, that had Sundin headed to the Rangers.

Twitter may help spread the worst fast, but that's not always a good thing!

The Forechecker, thanks for the comment. Certainly, yesterday's false alarm is a post in itself, and the purpose of this entry was just to show how the news got out on this huge breaking news. And to be honest, I was amazed how slow some of the news outlets were.

All that being said, I agree with you - Twitter rapidly spreading info isn't always a good thing, rumors can gain steam quickly.

I actually heard about the Sundin news from my husband who works for the official radio station of the Canucks (not some pop radio DJ). It doesn't really matter where the news came from in the blogosphere, it's the discussion that matters and I think we all have something to say about the former Leafs cap coming to Vancouver :-)

Well said Miss 604. The Canucks are actually my second fav team to the Sabres, have been since I was a kid, so as a Canucks fan, I definitely see where you're coming from. But as someone interested in the media and breaking news, I thought it was also interesting to track how the news spread! Hope you enjoyed the read.

@ Craig definitely, at least all of this lead me to your site!

Although, aside from my husband at the official radio station, I heard about it second on Twitter from @georgiastraight - they also got the press release and tweeted right away.

They're a great local paper in Vancouver, lots of news, opinions, insights and music updates.

That's true, glad you could stop by. And yes, I ran across @georgiastraight on Twitter tonight and was checking them out. Looks like they're doing good stuff. Thanks for chiming in, Sundin's going to look great in a Canucks sweater.
